Abstract: | Marriage has been one of the central locations where historians have explored emotion. Approaches from the history of emotions, however, have illuminated intimate relationships from new perspectives, explaining gender relations, power and everyday experiences. This introduction surveys the historiography of courtship, marriage, marital breakdown and emotion, discusses some of the critical new methodologies emerging from the history of emotions, and highlights the contribution the chapters in this collection make to this discussion. |
