National codes and standards such as those for reinforced concrete, steel and composite steel and concrete structures are invariably based on generic and fundamental behaviours and principles that allow them to be used with confidence and over a wide range of applications. Hence, before the technique of retrofitting by FRP plating can be fully accepted and applied in practice, it will be necessary to identify generic behaviours which will allow generic design rules to be developed and which is the subject of this paper.-
