Abstract: The University of Adelaide has recently commenced an upgrade of existing facilities at its main city campus. The project, with a total budget of $A41 million, incorporates the construction of two new buildings. This paper examines the geotechnical investigation conducted for this project and highlights inadequacies associated with geotechnical engineering practice in South Australia, and Australia in general. This situation is not uncommon to other parts of the world.
