Abstract: This article in Chinese is a book review of Gao Village A Portrait of Rural Life in Modern China that appeared in 1999. The article argues that history about the Mao era and the Cultural Revolution written from the point of view of rural residents is the history about the same period and same event written from the perspective of the Chinese political and intelletual elite.
